Metric vs Imperial

Why land when you can slam right into it?

I believe the problem there was they mixed English and Metric units. If they’d have stayed with just proven patriotic English (actually we should call it American Units since we are about the only country that has succumbed to Satan’s Siren call) it wouldn’t have crashed. But noooooo, someone had to mix the units, and we can see the results.:innocent:

Except even NASA said enough… http://www.space.com/3332-nasa-finally-metric.html

The following is a quote from near the bottom of the Mars Climate Orbiter Wiki page

“The discrepancy between calculated and measured position, resulting in the discrepancy between desired and actual orbit insertion altitude, had been noticed earlier by at least two navigators, whose concerns were dismissed.”

Been there before…where management dismisses the concerns by the worker bees…and we can see those results as well.

Nothing “about” about it. We are the only one left clinging to the Old King’s Units of Measure.

actually we should call it American Units

“American Units”? Give me a break. This is the UNITED STATES! And, your wish is granted…

What’s next!? Are they going to start requiring everyone to speak/write in Esperanto!!

I like Imperial measurements, especially mass. Saying I weigh 15.1 (stone) has a nice ring to it.

A nice ring to is it is DEFINITELY the way to select the measurements we use for precision. </ sarcasm> :stuck_out_tongue: The day someone can actually give me a non-lets keep doing what we’re doing because reasons… answer for the non-financial impacting aspects of this argument I will stop being sarcastic.

“microns” has a good ring to it, versus “mills”.

Metric is definitely better, I’ll just keep saying I weigh just a tad over 14, though.

I had a conversation with a redneck/moron coworker one time who was totally against the metric system. I was like, “ok buddy, if we filled the bed of your truck with water, how much would it weigh? You figure it in USA measurements, I’ll do it in metric, we’ll see who’s done quicker.” It took me about 10 minutes… he was working on it for at least an hour, mostly trying to find the cubic-feet-to-pounds conversion for water, since he couldn’t use Metric and it was pre-broadband-everywhere.

That lead directly to the loss of Challenger.

Bureaucrats will be bureaucrats whether their big heads are measured in inches or centimeters.

I prefer Imperial because that is what I grew up with. There are 2.54 centimeters in an inch; that one I remember from fairly frequent use. Likewise for 4.4 newtons in a pound or 2.2 pound mass units to a kilogram. A meter is just over a yard. A kilometer is about .6 miles. 350 cubic inches is 5.7 liters. Anything else I have to look up. Don’t even ask me about horsepower or BTU…

Horsepower and BTU aren’t metric units anyway.

So the Hellcat has approximately a 527kW or 1.8 mega BTU motor, or 717 metric horsepower.
