Metal shop committee meeting January 4th 2017

Ok, so sort of short notice but we will be having our metal shop committee meeting Wednesday evening at 7pm. The meeting will just commence in the common room then likely go to the shop.

Bring your ideas on how we want things to go in the future. If you have ideas on how you think we can improve.

If you are interested in teaching, bring it on. You do not have to be an expert by any means.

Future wants for tools.

Some ideas to make more space available:

remove scrap bin near sand blaster and put grinders in that corner (going from 2 to just 1 place to put scraps)
remove one of two drill presses
remove the large miller welder not hooked up to anything (not sure of the story on this, does it work?)
remove the black air tank
remove black leg table
remove small shear and HF brake
remove blacksmithing storage
remove tan cabinet (can utilize the wall shelving more instead)

Reminder the metal shop meeting is tonight.

Can’t make Wednesday nights :frowning:
See you tomorrow evening though!

Also unable to be there (I was hoping to make it, but it’s not going to happen).
Notes/Minutes, anyone?
Pretty please?

So here are the cliff notes.

We showed the couple new fancy equipment.

Discussed & getting rid of the following:

The old janky drill press, David to find out if another local Makerspace wants.
Harbor Freight metal brake, again to another local Makerspace.
The compressed air tank.
The old shear will be given to jewelry/small metals, providing they want it.

The two current TIG machines are to be repaired then likely sold pending arrival of a new TIG machine. New TIG machine will be offset the cost with the sale of the old machines. Did not go into specifics on make/model but was mentioned that we prefer another water cooled torch. Also we do not see the current TIG machine leaving until we have a replacement.

Modifications:
We will be mounting one of the bench grinders on the wall for Tungsten grinding only. This machine will be locked up to prevent others from grinding just normal steel on it.

Bench for the slip roll will be modified/built, this will be on large good casters.

Classes:

Next weekend I will be teaching the basics for the new equipment. The reason for these classes is to keep people safe & out equipment lasting longer. These classes will not go into detail on any maintenance of the equipment just the do’s & do nots.

Looking for people to teach metal shop 101. The material has been already developed from my understanding.

Looking for others to teach any other classes as well.

New equipment:

As said previously the existing TIG machines are being looked at being replaced. We do want more input from those who use the TIG machine for preferences. Obviously we will be getting a machine that will do HF start AC TIG, likely also liquid cooled torch.

We will be ordering a throatless shear. The Beverly style is the style that will be ordered not likely the brand specific.

Ideas for new equipment discussed but not decided:

Planishing Hammer

English wheel

Shinker/Stretcher.

Personally a tool that would fit almost all the above requests is the Baileigh MH-19. Not likely to happen due to cost, about 25k. It does power hammer, Yoder hammering, bead rolling, English wheel, bead rolling, thumbnail shrinking/stretching & planishing.

I’m sure I’m likely forgetting stuff, so others please input the items I may have missed.
