I am a new member interested in using the metal shop. My interest is in using the MIG welders. There are no classes listed on the event calendar. I am currently taking a continuing education welding class at Brookhaven College.
How do I go about getting certified (?) to use the metal shop?
Classes will come up periodically, so keep an eye on the calendar. For the convenience/posterity: https://calendar.dallasmakerspace.org/
Usually Lee @LeeCJones, or others, will post announcements here, as well, so you can keep an eye on here (at Talk’s Metals Shop category, so you’re in the right place)
The general format, so you can keep an eye out for them and plan, is to stack a Welding Safety course and then follow (frequently the same day) within the week with various Welding courses (MIG, TIG, Stick). The Welding Safety is required before welding classes, and those are required before using the equipment.
Alternately, if you like to spend time at the 'Space, hanging out may meet you with people who might be willing to walk you through what is needed on a more personal basis, but it depends on the chair’s approval whether you’re in the clear for using the equipment (current chair is Chuck (@dallasmagna)).
Welcome to the 'Space. Hang in there; what you need will come sooner than you think (though probably not as quickly as you hope).
I am curious what you are learning at Brookhaven, and from whom, if you care to share…
