Metal shop and/or welding basics class?

I joined DMS a couple of weeks ago, and among the things that I’m really looking forward to making use of, the metal shop and the MIG welder are way up there on the list. I have a project that is (at best) half-done, and I really need to spend some time finishing up the welding on it.

I’ve taken a couple of semesters of welding classes over at Brookhaven, so I’m fairly certain I’m not going to burn my face off. However, I realize both that the DMS needs to make sure I know all of the safety rules, and I also would really just want to be shown around with the specific equipment that the DMS has just so I know the ins and outs of things.

But… there’s no metal shop or welding class on the calendar. When I asked about this a week or two back on a Thursday night, I was told to post here and that perhaps someone could give me a one-on-one orientation, OR I’m more than happy to sign up for any class as soon as one’s available (although I’d hope that could be some time in the next few weeks, if possible).

I’m also interested in taking a welding class sometime in the near future! I’ve read that some instructors dont use the forums very often, so a personal approach may be best. Still, if it comes together, I’d definitely like to be in the class!

The member that has most recently been teaching welding classes is out of the country on business. He will be setting up more classes as soon as he is back in town.

@TBJK or @dallasmagna might be willing to talk to you and decide if you really aren’t going to “burn my face off” and let you weld until you can take a class.
