Hey guys and gals, I’m new to DMS and stopped by for the laser class last night. I was planning on using the metal lathe afterwards but couldn’t locate and of the tools. Does DMS have any cutting tools or bits for the lathe or do we need to supply our own. If DMS does own some where would they be located. Thanks!
The tool holders are in the drawer next to the lathe. The tools themselves are on the table next to the end mill holder, and the inserts are in a drawer in the end mill holder. We’re a little low on turning/facing inserts at the moment due to unreported damage/losses, but replacements will be available soon. Please put everything back when you are done.
There are some tools for the lathe. You will usually find a carbide insert tool in the tool post in a quick change toolholder. There are also several other holders, including a cut-off holder and a boring bar holder in the drawer that is currently on the floor next to the lathe. Various tools, such as cut-off tools and boring bars are with the other tooling in the cabinet on the table behind you when at the lathe.
For actual tool bits, with the carbide insert. I could only find a right hand tool. So I generally bring my own turning tools. I prefer HSS toolbits anyways for aluminum and brass. The carbide bits we have are for steels I believe.
Thanks guys! You are a huge help!
BTW, While the quick change holders can use a variety of size tool bits, the ones provided a 5/8" square, so you will have less work if you also use that size tool bit (if you bring your own).
If you do find a tool in the toolholder it’s because someone didn’t put it back when they were done with it. Please do so, including puttting the insert back in the drawer, in the appropriate bag if you can figure out what that is.
We (should) have inserts for aluminum, brass, copper, steel, and cast iron. For turning/facing there is only a single right-hand tool.
To be sure that I understand you correctly. Are you saying that the carbide inserts should be removed from the tool, and not just remove the tool from the quick change toolholder?
Absolutely. And put back in the bag, so other members know what it is. They should never be left in the tool holder.
No problem. Didn’t realize that, since I don’t think I have often seen the lathe when the right hand tool wasn’t in the toolpost. Also didn’t realize that we had inserts for multiple materials. Do you know what brand tools we are using for the right hand inserts? I would be interested in acquiring at least a left hand and ‘V’ style tools.
As with all things in life, and DMS in particular: Leave things as you found them or better.
It’s Ingersoll. By “V” style to you mean neutral? Or are you talking about a different insert?
It is the style where the tool can be used to cut either left or right, it is also used to thread.
Are the tool posts AXA or BXA?
BXA. FYI - We have internal and external threading tools.
Do either of you happen to know the bore size of the lathe? I’m planning on ordering some round brass this 1.25" to machine this weekend.
It’s bigger than that. 1.5", by the manual.
Perfect! Thanks again
