Does anyone have any suggestions for a good type of steel to use for the edge of an axe? I have a big piece of spring steel that will be made into the body, but I want to have something harder for the edge
Actually spring steel is good for an axe blade but 1095 or 1084 will sharpen better. The real difference maker is heat treatment.
You might consider hard facing, a la the This Only Tony video on specifically this:
