Are there any earlier woodshop orientation or metal shop orientation dates? I am a commercial electrical contractor and very familiar with tools, safety, and OSHA regs. But I noticed the current dates are full and I really don’t want my membership to dwindle.
For a metalshop overview there are usually people at the space most evenings andcwerkend afternoons who can help you out, Im typically there monday nights 6-10.
Post a few dates that work for you and we can see who is available.
There is a hot process safety class on learn.dallasmakerspace.org that you will need to take.
If you can weld we will interrogate you and if you seem legit you won’t need to take a class, we can just show you our welders and discuss startup and cleanup protocols.
CNC Plasma takes a class, we dont have wait lists so if you need that post on talk, sometimes there are cancelations so if you see a full class and have time to come in usually the instructor can let you join.
Our biggest problem is machine abuse, usually by newbies, but sometimes by experienced people. Our chopsaw in woodshop was destroyed recently by an “experienced” new member. When something breaks the committee members have to fix it. I spend most of my time there fixing stuff and teaching anyone willing to help. Come in monday nights if you are available.
For the metal shop machine side checkouts are an option for experienced users. The machine shop chairman Tim (@TBJK ) usually does a weekly Tool Time with Tim that would be a good opportunity for this. I don’t remember if it’s Tuesdays or Thursdays. Since he’s tagged here he’ll probably weigh in.
I think there is something simlar available informally for the woodshop, but I don’t know names or details.
I really help to have you green, if you search of it in the talk topics you will find how to get it.
There are 2 big things going on here
1st
You know how to build things or how to use the tools but what you got to learn thought in person training or online is maker space takes care or the tool. I know in the wood shop training you learn how to empty the dust collector, or what to do if something breaks.
2nd
Every one is watching each other mostly for safety, but also you have less experience poeple watching more experience poeple make things.
You might do something that you have done 100 times and you feel comfortable doing but if someone who is new tries to follow you they can get hurt.
Makerspace is an amazing place, it just takes time to just you bearing.
The more time you put in to maker space the more you get out of it.
The Calendar is the most correct current notification. If it says Full, then full it is. Mind you, someone may cancel, so keep your eye on the Calendar.
Tom’s class is showing up as open with 4 available slots on Saturday morning. If that doesn’t work out, PM me and we can setup a 1:1 session or something.
Thank you so much for the reply! Unfortunately I have a doctor’s appointment on Saturday so I can’t make that session. Can you let me know when you add more dates to the calendar so I can sign up?
