Meeting this Friday + Guidelines + More Goodies

After a very productive meeting this past Thursday and feedback from all of you lovely Makers I have compiled a quick and simple set of guidelines that Science Committee members should follow moving forward:

Vision Statement: The purpose of the Science committee is to enable Discovery, Education, and Fun, by providing a work space, tools, and expertise from our community.

Guidelines:

  • Tools
    • Tools available to the general membership should be labeled as such and have a “standard operating procedure” document attached.
    • Tools that require training should be labeled as such.
    • Users are welcome to loan tools for specific projects as long as the project is active. These tools should be labeled with the tool owner’s name, contact info, and project name.
  • Project/Tool Logs:
    • Each ongoing committee project must have a spiral journal to log any usage or progress.
    • Each log must include a date, a summary of what was accomplished, and the initials of the person writing the entry.
  • Be Excellent!
    • Science Committee is a community of smart, wonderful people! Share your knowledge, give help when you can, and ask for help when you need it.
    • If you are interested in teaching a class, as the great Shia LaBeouf says, JUST DO IT!!!
o DON’T LET YOUR IDEAS BE IDEAS.
    • Respect the Science area. Clean up after yourself. Be careful when using the tools.

I have scheduled a Science Committee meeting this upcoming Friday the 13th at 8PM. We will go over these guidelines AT THE MEETING! Any issues with implementing these guidelines will be addressed!

At the last committee meeting I compiled a list of classes and projects that members are interested in; unfortunately, I have not typed them out (yet) for everyone to see. When I do I will post them in response to this forum!

Thanks for being patient!

Can I suggest that creating a thread on talk for the project and posting there would be good, instead of only logging things on paper.

I like that idea. I think that how Auto managed the Lemon Car project last year. I wasn’t involved, but it was nice to read through the thread and check out the progress.

I think that would be good too especially for bigger projects that the whole Space is interested in. I like the idea of individual journals for smaller projects especially when the logs are just about maintenance, like the aquaponics tank.

I don’t know if this would be helpful but I’m going to the CAST conference this week and I’ve already started getting things in the mail advertising vendors who will be there and their products (for example, the MiniOne system which is a “gamechanger for how molecular biology can be taught in the classroom… instant gratification” – finish a full electrophoresis lab in a single class period). I didn’t know if Science was looking at potential tools to purchase but I can pick up brochures from the vendors and pass them on to you if there would be an interest (and/or if no one from the Science Committee is already planning on doing so).
