Materials Science

Science would like to collaborate with other committees to teach classes on what type of materials each committee uses to construct their projects. We figure people who are getting started at the makerspace dont know where to begin in selecting what materials to use for certain projects (wood shop, metal shop, jewlery, foundry, blacksmithing, 3D-Printing, electronics). Would some people from each committee write down a basic list of materials that would be good for beginners? We could make a video(digital media) for each committee, so it wouldn’t have to be a class given over and over again.

I’d love to learn about polymer science, but there’s a lot of chemistry I don’t understand yet in plastics. There’s only so many wikipedia articles my brain can hold.

Common plastics like acrylic, poly carbonate, ABS, PLA, Nylons, and polystyrene and how they “work” and the properties of each one.

If anyone works with plastics for a living and wants to teach a class, I can get an audience.

Cool cool! Are these the type of plastics we use at the space?

In 3D fab, yes, we have mainly ABS, PLA, PET, TPU (urethane resin). We have MDSA sheets for all the chemicals at the makerspace (probably). We have in a binder somewhere you might want to look through that.

ahh ok thanks, will do!
