Mask recommendations for DMS

As all of us have been wearing masks lately I wondered what the group thinks is an ideal mask for DMS?
I’ve used the traditional disposable mask like what my doctor gave me when I went to an appointment. I’ve used a mask my wife made from a bandana and I’ve used a mask that my son’s friend sewed for her friends and family. I’ve also used some masks that I used previous for woodworking that have real filters in them. I’ve also used the entire face mask with powered air circulation. I have preferences dependent upon where I’m going and what level of mask I think is most appropriate.

I’m interested in what everyone thinks about mask selection. I’m thinking of buying this one for use at the space in general.

I wear one like that, but I have fitted the ports with a layer of shop towel as a way to stop it from being a 1 way mask. The ports don’t help to keep you from spreading germs to others

I find the style you have pictured to be the most comfortable I’ve tried so far.

However, it is expressly banned at DMS because it has unfiltered exhaust valves.

This is bad according to people who still think masks do anything at all past containing droplets.

I’ve been considering designing add on external filters ( simple cotton over a 3D printed frame ) for the outlets. That would at least meet the requirement, while still keeping the damp outgoing air from having to pass entirely thru the incoming filter.

Jim went to WallyWaldo by the space the other day, He talked to them & they will give us a 10% discount on the FR masks they sell. So I bought one Tuesday afternoon. If you will be doing any work in the Metal Shop, I’d recommend it. No telling how quick the regular masks would go up in flames.

Now I only wear it at the space & its the first mask I’ve bought.

containing droplets is literally why we don’t allow the unfiltered exhaust port since it’s basically breathing straight in front of you.

The flow path having a 180 degree jink from straight in front of you makes it VERY unlikely that droplets would exit thru the ports rather than hitting the mask and sticking.

Perfect ? No. But then how good is the seal around the edges of a cloth mask ? Same exit path.

How much are they ?

Levi’s makes some that are on Amazon. It was like $15 for a three pack of several colors (reversible to black). They tie around your head so the ears don’t get raw.

Other places might have them but I haven’t been to a store lately to check.

I’m sorry, but do you have expertise in fluid dynamics or just assuming that even with forced air moisture and droplets won’t travel with it??

Even then, having picked many masks like these apart before, it’s not a good assumption that one will have such a 180 degree bend.

BS Physics 1989, MS Physics 1993. Private Pilot’s License 1986, and I’m at year 6 at the R&D lab for a major HVAC company. I’m a little better at it than most. Not an expert, by any stretch.

How about you ?

And how about those edge seals ? Especially on cloth masks.

The point is to divert the path; if you got past that line asking if you actually had experience in fluid dynamics before making claims of the mask vents, you would have noted that it’s moot when the mask doesn’t have such a bend.

Got it. You are the FOREMOST expert here.

Point was the convoluted path in the first place. And of course the porous mask that will do little to stop anything anyway.

But carry on.

OMFG. Must EVERYTHING be a frikkin huge argument and up for debate? Just WEAR THE $@#! mask as described.

Comply. Never question.

Great philosophy.

Just under 20$. It was exactly 19.44 with tax.

I know FR masks can be had for cheaper but I’m not sure where locally.

except most of these masks with exhaust valves don’t have a convoluted path; they’re a straight exhaust in front of the wearer without a path of resistance. that’s the point

Mine is up and to the sides. I stand by my analysis.

as a scientist, you should know better than to use a sample size of n=1 for passing judgement on what we can allow into this building.

I’m curious, I wear the homemade cloth masks but I also go in woodshop a lot. Any thoughts on how well cloth masks protect against saw dust?

Fallacy: Appeal to Authority.
