It would be a two year rehoming. From nation of makers. See photo and email the contact for details.
This is so cool looking! My concern would be what if we broke her. As we all know, nothing really lasts in its pristine state at DMS. Ideas?
It would make for a really great front lobby display and minimize the risk.
JJ, do you want to reach out to them and see if we can get more info?
Sure thing.
“Makerspace Rosie? Do we want her?”
Hell no. Unless we want it for scrap.
We have no business insuring this and potentially having to pay for it when someone damages or steals it. I don’t even think we should pay the $1,000 it would cost to ship it here. We don’t pay our dues in order to store art for other people.
Rosie belongs in a place with more public access than a couple of hours on Saturday. Plus you are not just storing her you are going to have to maintain her. Who is going to commit to dusting her for two years. She belongs in a children’s science center or museum.
We really really need some WOW marketing pieces for tours.
Ideally we want something everyone on tour will take a picture of and post.
I’ve been trying to get the right people for this for over a year now… The easiest solution I can figure out is a Stars Wars character with DMS branding in the lobby, and or an interactive Red Carpet style led wall.
We never did anything with that dope Pegasus we had. That was a rather unique opportunity.
Agree Johnny. Plus something that is Insta worthy that people will pose with in the lobby. Rosie ultimately may not be “it” but it has sparked a lot of discussion already about doing something big.
For those who may not be aware of Rosie’s pedigree, she is not just a random art sculpture. She is a crowd sourced sculpture brought to life with parts from all over the world. This was first assembled at a Maker national convention. As a Makerspace, this highlights all of us. Did anyone from DMS contribute? It is also great publicity to get more of the public to take notice and visit us. This isn’t taking away from any committee space or work area.
Ummmm. Rosie is, according to the description, eight feet tall. The ceilings in the lobby is eight feet tall.
We would not be doing justice, having her head scrape the ceiling.
To establish an understanding of the Pegasus in this thread the horse was a project piece to be made into something, this is a finished piece looking for a home.
While parallels can be made, I don’t think it’s fair for this discussion as DMS wouldn’t be making something into something else outside of possibly a base and display copy.
$1000 for shipping is a steal imo . She would generate that much free publicity in a about a month.
The first post in the thread says she is “8 x 6 x 4.5” ft tall. She is probably six feet tall with a two foot base.
Thank you, I missed that and you’re probably right. IF this moves forward we can investigate making a slightly lower platform or other options. This is only a “reach out and see if possible” at this point. I am sure many other Makerspaces are vying to have this at their location for the good PR.
If people are really interested in Rosie I am willing to put down masking tape on the floor of the front lobby showing how much space she is going to take up. Since I am new I do not just want to randomly start taping things. I think once we see how much room we would be giving up for two years it is not worth it.
Lobby has 12’ ceilings afaik.
