MakerCoin Initial Meetup - Y U No Crypto?!

@Team_VCC, the Crypto Sig, and @grobber15 have been talking about this for some time.

Dallas Maker Space Coin - Fact Finding and Feasibility Discussion

Wouldn’t it be cool for the DMS to have it’s own cryptocurrency coin? This discussion will attempt to answer that question by determining the feasibility/willingness to launch and maintain a crypto network.

The following topics will be moderated:

  • What problems/functions could a coin solve?
  • What transactions could a coin facilitate?
  • What team is necessary to launch and maintain a network?
  • How and what is necessary to maintain a market for the coin?
  • Do we have any legal and technical restrictions being a non-profit?
  • What are the monetary costs?
  • By the end of the discussion the goal is to have clear direction on if there is willingness to launch a coin, and the type of team necessary to push forward a project. If it is clear that it would be beneficial to launch a coin, building the team, determining the type of coin and launching a project, and will be follow-up events.

Looking forward to the meeting and conversations. :grinning:

Just came across this through Slashdot:

yep that’s just like any other business venture which ICO are. Remember, blockchain is not ICO and an alt coin is not an ICO.

Legally an ICO is on par of starting an ETF and hedgefund. What’s being proposed is more like a digitial arcade token or digial coin in some video game. No Fiat currencies or true monitary value is attribute to the coin but the coin can be used internally to the makerspace and participating spaces.

A maker could have their honorarim attributed to their account in DMS coin instead of funds from the treasurery and that coin could be used for say a discount towards tools and resources that cost the space to offer or time on the Lazer cutter all depends on what that committee agrees upon

I prefer cash. Non traceable, legal tender, etc.
DMS coin would be an interesting exercise, bragging rights and so on.
Not sure it would be worth the trouble.

Kind of reminds me of the company town/employer.
You’re payed in company script, which is good at the company store and company housing.
Worthless elsewhere.
