Maker Education Job available! (SMU)

Hey All,
Many of you know that I used to run the on campus Makerspace at SMU (called the Deason Innovation Gym). I was recently contact to let know that they are expanding their staff so they can do more cool stuff with students on campus, and I was asked to help “recruit” some folks out of our community that might be interested.

It is a very cool place to work, with flexible hours, good people, good pay, and a ton of fun. ( I loved it until I left to do my own startup).

Here is the official job description and link on where to apply. If you have any questions about the position I am happy to tell you everything I know.

"We are looking for someone to join the Deason Innovation Gym team to help envision, operate and maintain a state-of-the-art makerspace that serves hundreds of students each year with the tools, mentoring and programing to make, tinker, prototype and hack. Want to work where you can help people make a foosball table, vinyl stickers, quadcopters, holiday ornaments and innovative solutions to complex human problems? This is the job for you.

You must be proficient with tools common in a makerspaces (3Dprinters, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, power tools, electronics [microcontrollers like Arduino and Raspberry Pi, as well as sensors, amplification, LEDs, etc.], coding, etc.), both in using them for engineering applications as well as keeping them running smoothly. You must be an educator at heart who loves working with college-age students to help them develop their maker, problem-solving and engineering skills.

What kind of range do you think the salary is?

I love the last bullet point in Physical/Environmental Demands

  • Exposure to dust, fumes, gases, radiation, microwave

That’s when the fun begins!

And those exposures are different from doing work at DMS? At least there you get worker’s comp!

Bonus: if they all happen at the same time, you’re likely front-row-center for the birth of a black hole! :slightly_smiling:

The salary range is around 50k

I’m looking for a job and I much rather do this for a living than being an IT helpdesk. I’ll apply today.

Plus I have battlebots experience

Yup, Mitch, I’d say you’re the kinda person who would fit this job perfectly. College students like to be up until midnight anyway: bonus!

I thought I would throw something out there that might be relevant as people are considering the job. This job is being a MAKER TEACHER. There are plenty of opportunities within it for you to play, and to strut your stuff, but the majority of this is a support role for student projects. You won’t be able to just use the 3D printers and get paid for it, etc. Just like in many professions, interest and expertise doesn’t mean that you are a good teacher, which is something that will be highly emphasized in this position.

Also from an equipment standpoint. The Innovation Gym has a couple poly printers, a FSL laser, and many other common tools with the makerspace. I bought and placed them all there so I tried to keep as much common between the two spaces as made sense.
