Machine Shop Committee Meeting
February, 4, 2018
4:00PM Purple Classroom
10 Members present: Nick Silva - Chair, Tim Bene, Ray Tomkins, Mike Glass, David Kessinger, Bob Karnaugh, Scott Westerman, Ryan, Caldwell, Will Kutler, + illegible signature.
Upcoming Chair & Vice Chair. Nick will appoint a Vice chair at next meeting, looking for volunteers.
Class Discussions:
- Turning between centers and Flywheel class. Now have mandrels so class can be scheduled – Bob Karnaugh.
- Sherline CNC Lathe getting close to being ready to teach classes
- Sherline Mill & Bridgeport to be scheduled for Feb – David Kessinger
- Thread Turning – Will Kutler
Machine & Equipment Status - Lathe tool post slipping. Decision is to get a preset torque wrench or socket so tool post is consistently tightened without over tightening.
- Lathe cross slide gibbs. Either too tight or too loose, people keep adjusting. Will set and use witness putting o adjustment with note to be adjusted except by authorized members.
- Tool Black Box from Automotive. Need an approximate date we’ll get that or we need to buy a tool chest. We have lots of inspection tools that need organizing. Tim Bene will talk to Tom Tansey.
- Hydraulic lift carts locked to together to prevent persons from leaving Bridgeport tooling on floor and taking cart. Committee members provided combination so access to tools – can provide to other members as needed.
Purchase Authorizations:
- DRO X-Y for Clausing Lathe: Up to $1,600, Unanimously Approved
- Sherline CNC mill, basic turn key: Up to $2,800, Unanimously Approved
The above are re-votes and are recorded per new committee requirements for expenditures over $500.
Discussion about how Haas will be replaced when we move, current thought is Tormach 4-axis system. Other systems to be forwarded for consideration.
We have tooling to hold R8 collects in lathe, do not need to order special chuck.
Need to start a new list of small items.
- Nick to order brushes for small drill press so Jeweling can be done.
Other Items:
Items donated by Walter to Machine Shop. Committee agreed that Sherline Table be dedicated in Walter’s Memory. Also need plaque for Johnson on Machining Center.
Pantograph to be listed on on Craig’s list for $200 and other Makerspaces contacted to see if they want and will donate to them if 501 ©(3).
