Evening, y’all!
I meant to ask about this at last weekend’s monthly committee meeting, but it slipped my mind so I thought I’d post about it here to see if anyone could help me out. I just joined DMS recently after relocating to the Dallas area from Houston, and have started to get involved with the regular machine shop folks here. I’m fairly “experienced-ish” with machining (at least by amateur standards,) own a lot of my own tooling, and have been working on my own projects at a space down in Houston for a while now; however, I’ve yet to take any of the in-person classes here at DMS, so I don’t yet have keyfob access to any of the shop equipment, aside from the basic online “shop safety” permissions (see below.)
My question is, does there exist any sort of “fast track” for getting checked off, for members who are able to demonstrate that they understand proper use of the equipment? I’m already pretty comfortable driving a full-size engine lathe and vertical knee mill like the ones that we have here, although there are probably some minor variances between make and model that I would need to get used to. Of course, I’m more than happy to sign up for a course if that’s what I need to do, but given that courses tend to be scheduled on a kind of ad-hoc basis, I thought it might be faster to meet up with someone for an informal one-on-one check-off if that’s possible. If anyone would be able to help me out with that, or has advice on how to get access in a timely manner, please let me know! Thanks so much in advance!
