Hello members, I am really interested in joining the Dallas Makerspace as a member but I see you have to get a tour first. The only problem is that the designated times to get a tour are when I am working. Is there any way that a member could stay later on Thursday this week so I could get a tour? I wouldn’t be able to get there until around 10 PM. Thanks in advance.
Hello, Isaac. Actually you can join without taking a tour, if you like. It’s only $60 and you can cancel anytime, i.e. no long term commitment, just the for the month.
Additionally, while it can’t be guaranteed someone will be available or have the time to show you around, if you stop by during daytime or weekends there is a good chance you can get the information you are looking for.
But official tours are always the best way to get grounded before you jump in the deep end.
@dianarhodes, are you still doing tours on off days, on occasion?
Are you available today within an hour or two? I’m not an official tour guide or anything but can show you around.
Unfortunately, every weekday I work from 1:30-9pm so Its hard to come in weekdays during the afternoon/evening times.
That’s good to hear. For the most part I’m pretty set on joining because I’ve seen and heard lots of good things about the space and really want to get started on some stuff that I dont have the tools for at home. I would still like to get a tour at some point just to get to know the place better. Thank you!
As others mentioned, no tour required. I joined 3 1/2 years ago and still haven’t taken one. I lurked on Talk awhile, read a bunch of the website, then just signed up online.
They ARE useful for one-stop getting to know the different areas, but hanging out and taking classes can do that too, just slower.
Main thing is don’t be shy asking questions. Most folks are super helpful. I still make a point of talking to someone that I haven’t before on most of my trips, and it’s a good way to get to know folks. Just ask them what they’re working on gets great conversations going.
One thing, you’ll want to get your keyfob to get in the door 24/7.
@StanSimmons or someone else can help you do it in person or post instructions here on how to do it yourself.

as far as I know is still accurate. Requires getting in the door, signing a waiver, and having paid dues…
Let me clarify what Marshall said. You can be a member for as few or as many months as you’d like. However - when you set up the billing, that’s a recurring charge. It keeps billing you every month on a recurring basis until you take the effort to cancel.
I’m another person who joined without an official tour. In fact, I opted to pay for the full year all at once to get the discount there.
If it’s possible, you might try to plan to drop by in the morning when you’re ready to get your key fob/key card/subcutaneous injected doodad for entry, you may be more likely to catch a human coming or going in the middle of the day than in the middle of the night to let you in the door.
If you come in between 9 PM and midnight you WILL find people here and I’m sure you wouldn’t have any trouble finding someone to help you. That may not be the peak time of attendance but it is close.

Been wondering: how often now a days, if at all, is DMS completely empty? I’d think very rarely. I’ve been here at 3 AM before and there were half a dozen folks floating around. Guess I’m not the only insomniac around
Hey everyone hopefully this message gets seen by everybody who sent a reply to help out. Thank you guys so much for letting me know the situation and seeing that we should be able to get in at any time to get signed up. I feel like with just these responses to a non-member really makes me much more excited to get signed up and getting to know the community at DMS. Huge thanks again!
I don’t know for a fact but I suspect that 7 or 8 AM on a week day would be the best chance. No guarantees though.

Yep, mornings are the deadest. Though still kicking more often than not.
Be sure to sign a waiver on one of the tablets in the front lobby. Activating a key will not work without it.
