Please make sure the circuit is cut off at the junction box, if the switch still has power it could short out and start a fire.
If possible please kill the breaker - it is the breaker box on the far right closest to the compressor.
I will stop by Granger and get a smokeless switch tomorrow.
Luke does the Space have a Granger account?
The power on the lift (where the lock used to be) has been shut off and zip tied closed. I also put a piece of red tape across the button marking it inoperable.
I was standing near the lift when it started letting the magic smoke out. I don’t know if this has anything to do with the cause, but it seemed to let the smoke out when the lift was at the top of it’s range. Is it possible the circuit is overloaded when the lift is at the top and the button is still being pushed? It wasn’t being pushed for very long at the top, but it could point someone in the right direction for troubleshooting the root cause.
It is the switch. A local switch was used as a temporary measure - Granger has a smokeless model in stock that is also non metallic - Just hope they have it green to match the auto dept colors!
Color me electrically naive, ignorant, jargon deficient, or maybe just I have lived a sheltered life … but shouldn’t all switches be smokeless, except ones David Copperfield has perhaps.
All switches have smoke in them…once you let the black smoke out it’s a mutha to get it back in…
That switch was either made in Asia or possibly by the inventor of the short circuit - Joseph Lucas
Was a replacement switched procured ?
If not send me the basic info on it and I will get it and install ASAP
The “original” switch was a 125V 25 amp momentary switch.
Carey, can you go by granger ? I couldn’t get there yesterday and i cannot due to my work hours today?
You have my number call me or text me in a few minute ls and I’ll dig up the part number
call me 214 476 3607 or text the part number
DId not see one in the Grainger catalog that looked correct
looking up the alt right now - text you in a moment
granger has something that will work but does not look like the old switch - it will be on the counter with your name on it.
Is there any progress in getting a switch and repairing the lift?
Tom we installed a correctly rated 240 v 30 amp 2 HP switch and the lift works great. However its not momentary. If youre searching for a replacement we really suggest 30 amp at 240. The line pulls max 27 amp at full height no load. The lift is fully operational and I think future proof, however its not a momentary switch so we locked it out pending your words of god.
Btw, the most recent switched failed and shorted to ground, it blew the fuse so we bought two more tonight. One spare.
Would this be a viable momentary switch?

Momentary switches for this kind of an application seem like a no brainer considering our user base. The lift would only be able to move while someone was actively controlling it.
Thanks for getting the lift operational and specifying the requirements for a less smokey switch option.
Fits the specs exactly and we already replaced the faceplate with a switch plate so it seems perfect. Tom’s call
