Let's Play ... Name That Wood

I was given a couple of pen blanks for Christmas and finally got to turning one last weekend. In all honesty - I kept putting off turning it because as a blank - it was rather … eh to put lightly. However, when I turned it - it is honestly one of my favorite woods I’ve used - but I have no idea what it is. Apparently, my sister-in-law just got it out of the scrap pile at a Woodcraft in Tulsa. I’ll ask Woodcraft next time I’m there - but does anyone have a thought?

Possibly bocote. :blankspace:

Zebrawood?

(Not to be confused with a Z-Bra…the biggest size they make, I think.)

Tiffany? Jason? Angela? Am I playing this game right?

Bocote might be for the win. I’m pretty certain it isn’t zebrawood. I’ve played with that. I was thinking Beli - but still not certain. But @msmurray411 I’m holding out for Angela. I think it would be a good pen

If the blank was a uniform dark color and this is what turned out it is cocobolo. I was always meh when looking at those blanks but they turned out to have some of the best grain.

And I believe @Eric75252 is the winner. I stumbled on a site for cocobolo as well yesterday and I’m pretty certain that is what it is… Thanks all for playing. I need to see where to get some more now.

Try Woodworld. Or WoodCraft. On line, I have had good luck with Penn State. There are lots of others. Try researching woodturning supplies, pen kits or pen blanks.

@rpetefish - the blank actually came out of the WoodCraft sale bin - which my brother and sister-in-law picked up for a Christmas stocking stuffer. I took the pen into WoodCraft - and even they weren’t certain (to be fair - the person working that day - pens and wood types really weren’t their forte). That being said - it is most likely either cocobolo or bocote. I have blanks of both now to test. For those of you who might like to turn the bocote - Woodcraft (at least the one on I-26) has a box of them for $1 a blank on sale.
