I signed up for the beginner lathe class at 6:30 and was hoping to be able to sign up for the goblets and egg cups class that follows at 8. It won’t let me register as I haven’t technically completed the Lathe Basics class yet. Is there any way around this? Also, are guests allowed to classes to be “flys on the wall”?
Sorry if this is the wrong section to post this, new to DM and couldn’t find contact info anywhere.
To answer your question directly, it’s up to the instructor of the class, but…an unofficial opinion:
FotW can be problematic in some areas and for some activities in the 'Space. The Work Shop areas are inherently dangerous. For example simply being around a lathe with a piece mounted and spinning puts anyone in the vicinity at risk, even if that risk is minor. Yes, there is an “assumption of the risk” at work in all areas of the 'Space, but still…It’s like standing on the side of a road with a non-negligible amount of traffic just to count cars; do it long enough and you are probably going to get hit.
Further, some areas are not designed with extra spectator room in mind. Again, the lathe area is a good example. In fact it is already a close fit, and near the wood shop front door to boot, so it gets a lot of traffic going by for people working on semi-dangerous power tools that are holding onto a sharp tool/gouge while having their elbows sticking out.
Also, if you aren’t able to get into 2nd class Friday, and I don’t think our calendar system will allow for the enrollment, I am sure it will be offered again in the upcoming weeks so you wouldn’t be missing out permanently.
@jmendozatx you are clear to sign up now. See you Friday.
Generally, I limit my classes in size so everyone can see, ask questions, and participate. Lathe project classes are a little smaller as we are limited by the number of lathes.
My contact info should be avail with the class info, so people can message me directly to make sure I have not already let in extra class auditors.
