Large sandblasting?

I have a large parrot/sugar glider cage that’s rusted and flaking. It will fit in the powder coat oven but do we have a way to sandblast large panels like that?

Is it too big to fit in the blasting cabinet we’ve got? That’s the one in the Metal shop…

I once helped an uncle sandblast his race car before having it repainted.

We rented a sandblasting machine. We poured the sand onto the driveway next to the car and used the pickup tube to get the medium off of the concrete. We had to stop once in awhile to sweep it back into a pile.

Yes. A brand new one is only like $150 so if DMS does not have a way to blast it’s not worth renting one. But thanks @Bill for the idea! If I get any bright ideas about repainting my truck I’ll keep it in mind

Mrs Moose,

Your hubby does car work at home - so if like me he uses air tools, do you mind asking / sharing the specs of his compressor ?

He does. 125 PSI MAX 12 gallon. Super long house reel. Harbor Freight special with the replacement plan (essentially unlimited supply of them lol)

If you use tons of die grinders and impacts get a bigger one. Space and cash considerations for us kept the commercial grade one he really wanted out of the running.

The more interesting specification will be the flow rate of it. Sounds like @TLAR may be suggesting a handheld sand hopper. We don’t have one at the space, but HF has them for cheap and I bet someone at the space owns one that may be able to help out.

What is it currently coated with?

Bird droppings?

Thanks Bill! I’ll be cleaning up the drink I just spilled in that bit of laughter!

That or the type that make a smaller mess where it has a mesh type of bag at the end. (I’ll try to dig up a photo of it) essentially you blast into a bag against the object being blasted-clear as mud.

My home compressor for garage use is a USA made Iingersol (even the pump is USA made) 7.5 hp/ 80 gallon receiver, two stage 175psi@ 25CFM continuous.
For Impact guns I feed them with 1/2" hose at 150psi (for the overly concerned - yes my professional tools have the usual “90 psi max” on them as well, but no one in the trade functions well at 90psi - well not in real life).

Sugar glider droppings thank you very much

@TBJK light rust where the coating has worn off and began to flake. I suspect powder coat since I’ve seen the same gray/silver texture on other cheap things and the finish matches in both sides of the chips. It came with the new fuzz butts so I dont even know the manufacturer. I’ll price out portable blasters as well and ask if his is compatible

does the cage come apart?

could it be “made” to come apart to fit in the media cabinet?

and reassembled with tabs/fasteners or welds then toss it into the powder coating oven.

It may sound like extra work - but that is the core of what most folks at the Makerspace do.
