Fellowship Summary:

The U.S. Embassy’s Public Affairs Section is accepting applications for its American Center Korea (ACK) Maker Space Fab Lab Fellowship.

Makerspaces, sometimes referred to as “fab labs,” are creative DIY spaces where people gather to create, invent, and learn in an informal environment. At the American Center Korea, participants will have access to a 3D printer, laser cutter, VR (virtual reality), design software, craft and hardware supplies, tools, etc., to encourage learning and innovation.

The Fab Lab Fellow will play an integral role in fostering STEAM interest through makerspace activities and sharing his/her expertise and experiences with Korean audiences. The U.S. Embassy is reaching out to next generation Koreans interested in a hands-on introduction to the resources for designing and fabricating smart systems, including 3-D printing, laser cutting, and related fields. The Fab Lab Fellow will regularly lead the ACK’s instructional “ART-TECH” program, as well as other public outreach “making” programs for Korean audiences. Ideal participants include graduate and postgraduate students interested in sharing their passion for technology and innovation in a professional, English-speaking setting.

Goals and Objectives:

The American Fab Lab Fellow will hold programs 2-4 times per week (1-2 hrs. per program with 20 -40 participants) either at the ACK or outside organizations, focusing on hands-on activities, makerspace design, presentations, self-publishing, 3D printing, craftworks, etc. Specific goals include:

To introduce visitors to fabrication tools and processes while encouraging creativity and innovation;
To introduce Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) principles to young audiences in a fun and easily accessible way;
To provide accurate information about the U.S. high-tech and art industry and potential partnerships

Eligibility: U.S. citizenship is required; college degree (Engineering/Science/Art/Design major preferred); highly developed presentation and teaching skills; computer skills; interpersonal skills, science or engineering-related program writing skills.

Language: All programs must be conducted in English.

Venue/Time: The Fellow will be based at the American Center Korea (ACK), U.S. Embassy Annex, in Namyoung-dong from 8:30am to 5:30pm (12:00pm to 13:00pm lunch break), with frequent travel within Seoul and regional cities.

Audience: Korean youth, young adults, and young professionals (ages 8 – 35). The Fellow will also work with U.S. Embassy officers and local staff members.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Fellow’s duties and responsibilities are comprised of the following five components:

The Fellow will develop and lead informative and engaging classes on various topics, including 3D printing, fabrication, modeling, and innovation. (2-4 programs per week, 1-2 hours per program)
The Fellow will use a variety of visual aids and equipment as teaching materials and organize creative projects to gain participant’s involvement.
The Fellow will observe and evaluate overall science, technology, and “Digital First” programs in Korea and provide expert-level advice and recommendations to the U.S. Embassy.
The Fellow will assist ACK staff with program-related editing and reporting and additional duties as required.
The Fellow will have a frequent travel with in Seoul and regional cities.
Period and Financial Support:

Fellowships are for three months, (possibly, extendable up to six months depending upon performance and availability of funds.

Monthly Salary: Approximately KRW5,000,000
Up to US$4,000 for international air fare (Round trip between the U.S. and Korea), and insurance.
Housing will not be provided.
A citizen of United States of America can visit Korea without a visa for up to 90 days, for tour, visiting or commercial purposes.
Important Dates:

April 17: U.S. Embassy begins accepting Fellowship Applications.

May 14: Deadline for Fellowship Application Submissions.

May 19-22: Requests for invitation-only virtual interview will be made. Instructions for interview will be provided to selected candidates.

Week of May 26: Announcement of Fellowship Award Recipients.

July – September, 2017: Awarded months for working

The 5,000,000 SKW is about $4,400 US.

The hard part is the housing, unless you are going to live at the makerspace. :wink:
