Is the kitchen usable for any cooking or basic food prep? I might want to bring/make doogh some time (Iranian yogurt soda).
The “kitchen” is extremely basic: Microwave + easy bake oven. Small sink. Keurig. Refrigerator. Ice machine (right?). More like what you would find in a corporate office break room/kitchenette setting.
Got it, so I’d pretty much need to bring anything prepped beforehand.
Pretty much…take a look the first time you are in and see what’s there, incl inside cabinets (contents in them tend to change over time, I think). The main rule of the kitchen is to keep it clean and put everything back where it came from.
The short answer is no we can not do cooking classes at DMS.
Of course we can do cooking classes. We just don’t have much in the way of equipment.
We could probably use instant pots and other electronic equipment. Only other major things would be knifes and cutting boards, but those shouldn’t be a problem.
No cooking on site… mumble lease mumble
If my understanding is for we can not to cooking classes because one the lease will not allow it…. Two we would have to be inspected by the health department…… three, members can barely keep other areas clean. You sure you want to try that with food??
Which three? I say get rid of 'em!
Fixed it. Hdhshshb
When I was a Director I talked with the Head of the Carrollton Health Depart. Basically: as long as the Fire Marshal didn’t have a problem, i.e. things that could catch fire, we were not selling anything or serving to the public, the classes were not part of a school, open to just members … he saw no problem in terms of DMS having a License, Health Code Inspection, or Health certificates. Was fairly supportive of what DMS was doing.
If you recall we had classes on cake/pastry decorating, making “cold” appetizers and sushi. We also have get togethers using crock pots and warming trays outside the kitchen. It is very limited. The current BoD can set whatever restrictions they want, but there was not a total ban. The “lease” provision is one that has been interpreted liberally … common meals and food warming is okay. Don’t forget we do BBQ’s out back … which is still on the premises.
Yep, it’s a lease provision. The galley and BBQ (only during events) are things we’ve asked for permission for. We will generally discourage any other preparing of food and will currently not allow cooking classes.
Thanks,
Justin
If I recall the kitchen appliances we’re suffered to have by the landlord are a commercial microwave oven and a coffee maker with all others forbidden.
“Cooking” or “food” classes? Those can be very different things. Like the cake decorating classes were not cooking classes, but they involved edible food. We’ve also had various modernist food classes (think spherification & culinary powders). None of those classes involved items that couldn’t be found in the DMS kitchen.
We need to be a little more specific. If it’s “cooking” classes, is the use of an appliance that heats up the food what makes it a “cooking” class? Is it defined at all in the lease? I know that’s what has held us back from having classes where we physically are cooking the food on site.
Anything to do with food must be cleared first, full stop. The instructor who did the cake decorations asked and worked with us.
If you want a written rule, it’s going to ban all food related classes for clarity.
wait wait, we have an easy bake oven?
Technically, I believe that it’s a convection oven. I think we get by with it because it looks microwave-ish enough.
Aww, I was hoping it was an actual easy bake oven. That would be fun.
