Hello! Kevin mentioned that I could learn how to do a certain style of Japanese Pottery. Does anyone know what that was the style is? Was it Karatsu?
“Kintsugi”. We taught a class once. The person doesn’t come to DMS anymore. I think that they bought a kit that had enough to “mend” several pots. The kit was not cheap, as I remember.
Now that I’ve looked up Karatsu, that doesn’t look like it’s particularly unique, so far as techniques go. One trick might be that we fire glaze to Cone 6, rather than Cone 10. I see that some pieces have underglaze painting. That’s do-able. For that matter, the last I looked, we still had iron oxide. Some of the painting may be in iron or cobalt oxide.
As I recall Liam also knows something about jomon pottery. And Anette has made jomon dogu sculpture before.
And of course there are the raku events, though we typically do the modern “western” raku instead of the traditional version.
come to the committee meeting you can discuss what classes might be possible.
The kintsugi class was not the traditional process, it was a simplified version using glue and real gold dust ordered from overseas.
Please do attend a committee meeting and bring up these classes so we can determine committee interest and potentially set class dates.
