@jphelps and I did a little stick welding last night, and he did a great job for zero experience! My rusty skills were showing, too, so it was a learning experience for all. 
We covered stick welding basics, materials, and rod types. Use a bit of scrap from the bin and some 6011 that I had and some 7018-H4R from the rod “oven”.
As the Doctor would say, “Stick welding is cool!”.
