I am currently investigating/exploring the ins and outs of having a propane tank installed and accompanying service. It is not quite as straight-forward as I expected. If you have gone through this process, i.e. you have a propane tank on your property and top-off service, especially if it was done in the last several years, I’d like to ask a few questions over email or phone. Thanks…
I’ll be interested in hearing what you learn. I’m considering this option for a backup generator.
My brother’s previous house in Northern Virginia had a large propane tank buried on the property. Barely visible.
If above ground - I think you should make it look like the Yellow Submarine!

Check your city ordinances first, not all allow propane tanks on residential property.
Northwest Propane Gas Company would be a good place to start looking to tanks both purchase and lease, along with regular fill service.
Good tip! In my case, out in the country, so only county has jurisdiction. I’ll contact Northwest and see what they have to say.
There may be restrictions on painting the tanks. Authorities having jurisdiction, or the gas companies themselves may have regulations or refusal to service painted tanks.
The reason being that colors that absorb more sunlight, and in turn can overwhelm convection cooling, resulting in higher temperatures, and thus pressures of the contents.
