Is there any need for orgsnizing the electronics room and what would be helpful?
You have many good parts…I think the biggest thing that would help organization (or at least the appearance of it) is out of the way storage for the white boards.I love white boards… they are incredibly useful for group conversations and instruction…
This a good idea are there others? I have swept the floor and taken out the electrical refuse… I am making a list for a possible work day… My thoughts are brainstorming until approval by makerspace.
Hugely in need, yes. Even something as simple as reshuffling the bin-labyrinth of components by type… resistors with resistors… caps with caps… SMD vs. discrete parts… etc. would help greatly. I think this has been an ongoing topic of discussion for quite a while now. It’s getting a 'lil crowded in there.
Too much salvage IMHO. Would prefer to have a larger range of more commonly used parts (cover the basics first) before branching out into the esoteric stuff. Can’t find a 10k 1/2w resistor when I need one (lots of 1/4w though) for example. Do we have any?
Maybe also construct a rack unit for tektronics… Comprising general testing equipment for a job a scope power supply bias supply and load…
You don’t need approval to start organizing / improving the area, just don’t do anything that isn’t reversible. You will need to work with @Lampy if you need any funds
Please do organize. You will be loved by many
Good luck,
It is particularly difficult to reorganize the electronics room as it is where the pack rats nest. Cough @artg_dms
But seriously, they really need a member or group of members that will actually reorganize rather than plan for new furniture. They have shelving and bins, so clearing out the trash and organizing what we have would be the next logical step. @Lampy drops by regularly and spends most of his time cleaning and getting the tables cleared. I’m sure he would praise any help.
An AI robot inventory management system is probably out of the question.
Perhaps consolidate white boards in the large room used for board and member meetings, classes, etc? There’s that back area with several white boards there already.

Random: A PC connected label maker and a case of labels might be useful. Lots of bins have labels however I’m just thinking any serious reorg would require a lot of new ones.
Thanks for cleaning the lab! Too many times, it is left in a rather messy state.
I suggest you first join the electronics committee, go to a meeting with your plans, etc. before just launching in at a total reorganization. Putting some things away here and there is a good thing, but big changes should have some planning at the committee level.
Electronics salvage is great stuff! Too little in my opinion.
I believe there were some parts cabinets that were tagged for electronics at Fred’s warehouse. Check with Art to be sure.
Actually we have a computer with a label maker.
If the pack rats bring more shit into the electronics room without finding a home for it, you will be looking for a new chairman. I can only spend a couple hours a week “organizing.” But since so many people leave the area a mess, I don’t do any organizing at all. Instead, I just shovel crap from the benches into the trash.
Stop just dropping off stuff on the floor!

[/quote]Thanks! I didn’t realize that was going on and it explains a lot of the jumble.
