My dad gave me some cedar boards for Xmas that need to be squared up. Is rough cut cedar allowed on the planer/ jointer? Thanks!
Yes, as long as it is not “weathered”, i.e. has spent significant time outside, e.g. cedar fence slats or panels. From your post, that doesn’t appear to be the case (kind of a crappy present, right?), but worth making sure of.
Here might be the actual, current rules this subject:

Or maybe not…I am not 100% sure anymore. Relevant/current rules may also be posted in vicinity of the miter saw station. Or not…
Also, suggest you read and bookmark the sites and pages relevant to you on our “Source” website…it will save you some time waiting for answers.
If they are still moist they will probably trip the Saw Stop. If they are dripping wet, they should dry out before using our equipment. Otherwise you are good to go.
These were the start of a rewrite of the rules. They were never approved by the Woodshop Committee. Note the word retired in the file location.
The complete and official rules, approved by the Woodshop Committee are here:

For convenience, here is the official list of banned materials (note that the planer and jointer have additional materials that are banned for those specific tools (like plywood and engrain boards among others).
- Pressure treated lumber: Do not cut, sand, or work on pressure treated wood.
- No Southern Yellow Pine and any wood with visible sap in the woodshop on any freestanding tool in the shop the planer or jointer. See sign next to Laguna bandsaw for more details A bit of the discussion surrounding this can be read here. (https://talk.dallasmakerspace.org/t/20180815-woodshop-meeting-pine-ban-discussion/41154)
- Reclaimed wood: Do not cut or sand reclaimed wood (pallets, barn wood, etc) using free-standing power tools.
- No wood concrete forms allowed
- No pallet wood in woodshop
- Wood with dirt or sand on the surface (brush off or power wash dirt and sand). Dirt and sand will dull blades very quickly.
- No metal may be cut in the woodshop.
- No plastic may be cut in the woodshop except:
-Minimal machining of acrylic pen blanks
-Cutting sheet plastic to size on a table saw if using a plastic-specific blade you provide.
Yes…I had noticed, but it’s confusing because your link is also embedded under the “Retired Rules” area. In fact, If I am interpreting the directory structure out on Source correctly, all the rules and etc. are embedded under the “Retired” main folder.
But happily, the OP got his answer, so it’s a good day at DMS :–)
Great! A paper copy of the complete rules are posted above the miter station and the top 10 things you need to know are posted at each of the major tools.
