That was a bit aggravating. After promising us that we could put in banking info for direct deposit, last week we got some “can’t find the payment date” kind of crap, and today they’ve already moved on to “we’re mailing a check”.
Not that it’s a huge deal – verifying people’s info that fast to be really, really sure it was the right person was evidently too much work. I just wish they hadn’t promised us a potential direct deposit if they were going to welsh on the deal.
From talking to my family I think the direct deposit payments are going out roughly in the order the return came in. Wild speculation: Your return may have been early enough that you were already queued for payment before the “enter you bank info” tool went online.
Don’t blame the IRS on this because they have never worked so hard and so fast to get this done. The pressure was insane! The last time stimulus payments were sent, it took months for the 1st people to receive theirs. This is beyond unprecedented for the IRS. I’m still in shock it happened this fast!
Yes…there were hiccups, but it’s beyond words that people have gotten their money so fast. For once, the IRS deserves some accolades. There was no time to properly test like normally happens, so they deserve some slack.
After the Get My Payment portal went up on the 23rd (if I remember correctly), I checked for myself and my spouse (separate tax returns) but we were both listed as “Payment Status Not Available”. The system said that it only updated once a day so I’d check once a day each 24 hour period and two days ago (4/27) was when we were finally listed in the system. I was able to put in direct deposit information (although no set date for the deposit to happen yet) but my spouse’s status already said “check will be mailed on May 1st” with no option for direct deposit information.
Neither of us had filed a 2019 tax return yet and my return I usually file an extension for and file near the Oct 15th deadline but my spouse filed by April 15th. The only other thing I can think of that may of affected sorting is that my last name starts with “Z” but spouse’s starts with “D”. I guess if I had done nothing, my paper check would of been mailed out sometime after May 1st but I still have no nailed down date for actually receiving the payment yet.
Yeah - this has been like light speed compared to their normal turnaround for new stuff. Plus, I figure the folks promising things are several layers away from the folks doing things.
