Introduction to Electricity *without* math- THIS SATURDAY (1/3 at 3-5pm)

Hi Makers,

I’d like to teach a class on the basic “properties” of electricity (what is electricity, what are voltage, current, and power), as well as basic circuits with resistors. I’d like to do this all with basically no math, instead focusing on concepts and analogies. I hope that this will allow those at the space more interested in the arts and workshop to feel more confident in their understanding of the basics of electricity. If you’re interested, please heart this post.

Thanks,

Will Stewart

The class has been added to the calendar for Saturday January 3rd at 3-5pm. Curriculum isn’t final, but I think it should only run about 90 minutes.

Will,
I greatly appreciate your offering this class and I look forward to being there!
I have been trying to teach myself electronics and would be interested in more advanced classes as well.
Below is a link to my personal copy of Heathkit Basic Electronics for Hobbyists that I have been reading and Evan Lott digitized so that Makers might use it. I hope you find it as useful as I have.
Thanks

I clicked on the links and started reading the “Heathkit Basic Electronics for Hobbyists”. It was very well written and looked like a great way to learn about electronics. I downloaded the copies and I hope to study them further.

This book looks like it would be a good textbook for a class in electronics. I would be interested in that class and I wouldn’t mind it if it included some math.

I also took this opportunity to read about the history of Heathkit whose kits and educational materials had a great reputation and would have very much appealed to Makers. I was surprised to learn that it stopped offering the kits in the 1990’s and if you want to find out why, read this link:

sounds like a great idea for class. I would like to learn useful practical things as well like the proper way to desolder stuff without lifting traces, how to figure out the resistor values needed for circuits, basic power circuit design.

Turn the heat down!!

Last time I tried to desolder a PS/2 connector with wick and a solder sucker, I totally destroyed it. The best way I know is one of those expensive hakko desolder vacuum guns. I was using the Metcal to desolder so it’s whatever temp those use.

The Hakko makes it easier, but you can still destroy traces with it. There are several techniques that would take about a half-hour to demo, but the real key is practice.

Don’t mean to hijack the thread… @Will, if you have a hands-on section and/or need TAs, I could probably be available to help out. Sounds like an interesting class!

No need to worry about hijacking the thread. I don’t have any plans to do a major hands-on class at this time. I live in North Carolina 8 months out of the year, so I’ll probably do some more in-depth classes over the summer.

One of the topics I’ve considered offering is Basic Electronics, including Ohm’s Law. I don’t want to conflict with whatever you are doing, and I don’t have a curriculum prepared. I probably would want to collect the honorarium, so I would need a two-week lead time to get Board approval.

The class will take place on Saturday at 3pm.

Although the eventbrite says that it will be in the workshop (whoops), it will most likely be in the hands-on classroom. Hope to see you there!
