As Secretary of Numismatics International, the society for world coin collectors, I’m wondering whether anyone would be interested in an “introduction to numismatics” class, or in specific numismatic topics. Admittedly I asked this almost a year ago, & never really did anything about it, but support seemed rather soft. We have new members since then, & existing members may have discovered new interests in the meanwhile, so I thought I’d ask again.
I would be interested in knowing more. Of course there is not a lot other than pop culture that I don’t want to learn more about
Carson, I would love such a class. My Grandfather left me his coin collection. A few items are interesting like several trimes. Along with a bunch of big pennies.
I would be interested in a class that would help with how to classify coins I have collected.
I’d be interested in an intro class to get the basics. I’d be most interested in ancient and medieval coins, being a history buff, and manufacture techniques.
I’m an active collector so let me know and I’ll be there
I’m thinking of making it two sessions, say 2 hours each, at 6 PM on Saturday the 16th & 23rd of January. Does that suit?
I thought Numismatics was the science of reading bumps on your head? If so, I’m in!
That would be Phrenology and it isn’t a science.
I too am interested - I have coins from every country I’ve set foot in and many others.
Zorba the Retrophrenologist will give you the bumps to correspond with the personality traits you wish to have.
Submitted with dates as proposed.
Coin collecting is only the beginning of the field of numismatics, which penetrates into such disparate studies as history, economics, metallurgy, and the decorative arts.
In this class, we will examine some of the aspects and the objects of numismatics, beginning on a level suitable for newcomers but hopefully incorporating matter interesting to longtime hobbyists.
I intend to bring in various coins, medals, paper currency, & so forth from my collection, to illustrate various points. I actually own a coinage die, so that should add some interest to the proceedings.
I’d be interested in taking your class. I have a modest collection of coins from my grandfather. My son, however, has a more extensive collection. I’d be especially interested in grading and valuing coins. Thanks for offering to teach a class. Your dates and time selections work for me, however, 7:00PM would be better.
Ok, so here I am on the date specified on the calendar and no one is here. Did this get cancelled or is it the weather?
I was a bit late, but apparently this was not the best day for it, as some folks who had contacted me didn’t show up at all. Therefore I’m going to slip everything by a week. Part 1 will now be on the 23rd, & Part 2 on the 30th.
Sorry, but I won’t be at the next two numismatics lectures. I have prior commitments on both the 23rd and 30th.
Getting ready to head out the door. Hoping to see some folks there!
I have created a Wiki page for this class, & uploaded the first set of slides.
This is a topic which, I think, is more interesting than people at first give it credit for being. I’ll have to re-do the class at some future date after drumming up enthusiasm ; but even if you didn’t come to the first session, there should be plenty for you in the second session, this Saturday.
