Someone suggested a storage bin with combination lock for nicer tools and machinery, which is actually a good idea, and I wouldn’t mind buying the “bin” starting the collection if it werent fear of it being thrown away, so other than the 100$ totes is there any personal storage solution to make such an idea happen and not get tossed cause storage isn’t allowed
None of the Personal Storage Bins have gotten thrown away. They are all shelved between Electronics and Science.
To answer your question very directly- no, there are not other options. The personal storage bins, in the designated area, are the only place where personal storage is allowed.
Considerable thought went into the existing storage bin solution. There are lots of factors to consider. I think it’s a bad idea to store more valuable things there. I can see the upsides but the downsides are much more significant.
I was the one who suggested it. I had in mind a lockable box small enough to fit in a Trofast bin but large enough to hold some router bits or chisels. Seems no less safe than keeping the same tools not locked up in a wood shop cabinet.
And that’s the minimum. Enterprising makers could add more security like a motion alarm with RFID switch.
Moving the box among several members’ bins adds to obscurity.
Point being, there are ways people can share and secure tools if they put their minds to it instead of saying “Hey DMS- figure this out for me.” Members are supposed to be makers after all.
The 20$ bins or the 100$ bins? Do the 20$ bins still exist?
Yea but the physical fact of not being allowed to store things makes its pretty un makerable, and to reference the committee in charge of it that’s more of a logistics issue than a hey I want dms to do all the work issue, try parking your car in a place that says no parking for a night and you’ll understand the problem! So I do just want to say this because the thread was closed before I had a chance to, 1 I’m perfectly fine with the no personal storage rule I was just seeing if a good idea was able to be implemented, and 2 my criticisms don’t come from a place of ohh Dms is so shitty there’s alll these issues, Dms is awesome and for 60$ it’s pretty cheap in retrospect for what you’re given in return, I don’t think any 1 person or committe is operating or doing anything poorly, my opinions come from a place of hey Dms is great let’s make it better, and just like when people say” well if you don’t like America you can just get out” people like that are hindering growth, you should always want to improve upon what currently is, so I’m not saying oh this woodshop is run poorly, Ian doing a pretty kick ass job as I commended on his super fast handling of the felder incident, so there’s not 1 ounce of me saying anybody’s not doing their job or doing a bad one, it’s things are good here let improve upon what’s already a pretty awesome place
That’s literally the tote you’re supposed to use for personal storage per our rules. When personal storage slots are open (last I looked one or two were available) it’s $20 and you have to have one of those totes.

You are confusing personal storage with project storage.
Well if it’s a communal thing with multiple peoples high end tools it would only make sense with it being something like project storage so it always accessible to anyone who’s tools are there
Ok see that’s what I was asking if the 20$ still exist, thank you for where do I put said 2o$ or is there a iPad with it on there
It’s almost like I linked to the rules regarding personal storage.
I will be at DMS tomorrow (Friday) and will give up my personal storage tote. So there will be at least one empty slot. I am moving out of State and will no longer need it. Hurray up and grab it.
Forgive me if I had thought there might have been policy changes to the official rules of personal storage due to covid, I know how to operate hyperlink
Again, it’s almost like all rules are on the wiki
And most importantly I replied to your question about how to pay for it and set it up, which is documented on the wiki
Luckily for you it won’t be a concern you’ll have to bear, if you choose not to be a part of the fund/group! We or I have weighed the ups and downs and will proceed cautiously
Yes! Lets tell everyone that you are going to store valuable things in your box on our forums! This makes hella sense!
Jesus guys were talking a couple of router bits and small tool not really Danny ocean worthy stuff being stored so stop think there’s this “conspiracy” abouyt people waiting to steal the tool I want to store
For whatever it’s worth, having no protection or security for the stored items was a design feature, not an oversight. We don’t want people trying to store expensive stuff because it becomes a liability. By not providing any protection or security at all it says loud and clear that you shouldn’t store anything valuable here. The intent was to provide people a place to store small and inexpensive things like a roll of filament, bottles of glue, screws, whatever $10 or $20 thing. It was never intended for people to store valuable things. If you want to store valuable stuff then nobody is going to stop you. It’s just stupid to do.
