Ideas for holding a table base

I have a large pecan table top weighing about 250 pounds. I am building a base using an old wagon axle and wheels. As you can see in the photo the weeks are inserted into pecan boards about 4" x 4" x 24" each. I need to attach the boards to the wheels. My thought was to drill 2 holes on the front and back of each board and run wire multiple times around the wheel through the holes. Thoughts? Would copper wire be strong enough? Other ideas?

Copper wire is not overly strong. I’d be looking for some steel wire, if it were me. I mean, I make bracelets from 16ga copper wire. While that doesn’t deform in regular wearing, it’s pretty easy to manipulate to create the bracelet.

It’d probably fine so long as the table is sitting still, but moving it could stretch the copper.

Brass wire? I’m not sure you can get bronze wire. They had the Bronze Age because copper weapons deform too easily.

I’m having trouble escaping the idea of “u-bolts” or other “wagon-y” hardware, i.e. carriage bolts and/or square nuts.
They’re traditionally used to bolt axles to boxes (i.e. car axles to frames, wagon boxes to springs/axles, etc.).
I turn to Engles Coach Shop’s work for inspiration:

So in my head, a couple through holes, maybe u-bolts, nice thick threads and square nuts… Love to see some finished product; love the work so far!

Thanks. went with some u-bolts from home depot and may wrap some leather around for disguise.
