I quit beleaving videos!

When I first saw “Forest Gump” at the movies I realized I could never trust videos again. Technology has only made it worse. It used to be that if it was live "maybe it’s real. Now this.

What’s insidious about this technology may not be the fakes that are created, but that it gives people caught on video the (now) plausible deniability of saying to saying “that wasn’t me, that was a fake”.

Ugghhh…

It’s not difficult to tell if a video has been tampered with (or outright fabricated). You just need a little time and the right tools. In other words I’m not worried that this kind of technology will be problematic. That technology is more likely to be used for humor and parody than for the stuff conspiracy theories are made of.

I agree that this can often be sussed out if you inspect the video footage after the fact. But, that doesn’t stop the damage that can be done in the interim of that. It is amazing technology for puppetting, but damn if it isn’t a bit scary to think of it being used to change the words literally coming out of someone’s mouth. Adobe dropped a new audio package that can make the audio sound like you as well. But, it seemed a bit wonky still, not meeting the standards of believably the face mapping has gotten to.

Always changing this world.
