I broke it yesterday

I was cleaning up the metal shop yesterday afternoon and was hanging the clamps on the clamp rack. It pulled off the wall. I will fix it Saturday. Also, all of the angle grinders had their guards removed. Someone will get hurt. What is DMSs liability/position?

We’ve already noted the clamps; don’t bother fixing it, we’re looking at repainting and we’ll put it back up after. We also need to switch it to better anchors or do some studded 2x4 over there

As for the grinders I kept putting them back on for a year and they get taken off. At the shrouds still over there at least or do we have to procure more? They could be mixed in with the logistics ones.

I’ve always considered just welding a ring such that it is locked in but movable.

Understood.
I will be happy to make replacement hangers for all of the helmets, clamps and grinders similar to the hooks on wooden backing boards that are already up. They will be tied into studs. That will organize the area and free up horizontal work space. The grinder shrouds can be repositioned and possibly altered so that they can be adjusted but not removed. Posting a sign forbidding shield removal will also put DMS in a better “good faith” position for when when an injury occurs. I understand that the shop needs to be painted but if we put the hangers up now and people say that over “here” is better, then we won’t have drywall patches that need to be painted again.

This is also partly why we don’t provide cutoff wheels; they’re mostly used for flap disks or someone brings a cutoff wheel of their own and at that point if they don’t like the guard they’re liable to bring their own grinder with it.

Be aware that the studs are “wonky”. They’re metal, which is why we have so many issues with stuff falling.

Beth,

Thanks for the heads up.

I will research how best to distribute the weight and the best fasteners.

Best,

Jim

We know how to do it (this was a one off that wasn’t done right), but whilst we appreciate the attitude to try and handle it please don’t try and do it yourself. Infrastructure stipulates these things now and has an appropriate layout for mounting things like this… It was already going to be redone when the walls are to be painted.

Understood. I will defer to Infrastructure.

I would like to donate the “racks” but will need to coordinate with

someone to make sure the racks are suitable. I would like to learn more about

Infrastructure and pitch in. Who do I talk to???

Best,

Jim

I’ll open a separate conversation about infra. Unlike a committee, Infra has some small controls on the group to ensure things are done right since M/E/P etc are critical for everyone.

As for the racks, details help like what are they and what for? Don’t recall seeing a reference to them before this message. Whatever committee or group they go to will have to accept them.

I planned to bring this up for discussion at the Metal Shop meeting on Saturday.

I have fotos of what I have done with my welding area.
