Can someone enlighten me as what they are really used for?
Turning on a lathe. We have lots of lathes at Makerspace and teachers.
Thank, I was thinking that, but these are way smaller than the ones that I have used on the lathe at DMS. When I got them, I thought they would be great for finishing pens, but again, the size made me wonder.
By the shapes of some of those tools, I’d say traditional woodcarving.
Probably for little turning.
When turners do very small things. Pens, finials, wands, etc. they use these.
They are a lot better for detail work. You can always give them a new grind of your choice and make them into any type of tool you want. Well, almost any.

Thanks everyone. I will give them a try the next time I am DMS. Is there a class on sharpening woodworking tools? Or will youtube suffice…
I used to have some carving tools like this, the size is right and shape of tools. If for a lathe I’d expect longer metal portions for the tool rest. But they could be used on a lathe I suppose
@jeffbob is right. They were originally intended for small tabletop wood turning lathes.
