How to get started with using the Sewing Machines?

I’m hoping to use the sewing machines. I just recently joined, so I wasn’t sure what the sewing machine etiquette was. Do I need to take a class to be allowed to use them? What materials are provided vs. need to be provided by me? Do I need to reserve a time to use one?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome!
Training or proficiency check is required on each machine.
We generally start with the babylock zests, which includes an introduction to the sewing studio.

I have submitted a sewing 101 class for this coming Tuesday evening at 6pm. The system should post the class sometime today.

If you are already a proficient sewist, I can meet with you one on one to check you out on the machines you already know.

Re: Materials
On the whole - DMS provides tools, and us members provide consumables. For sewing this means we bring our own thread, fabric, and rotary blades. Members should also donate a dollar or two to help offset needle costs and maintenance of the room.

However we do frequently receive donations of thread and fabric. Those donations are left for members to use.

So in short- we sometimes have fabric and thread, but if you want a guarantee of the correct fabric and thread, bring your own.

Re:time-
No you do not need to reserve a time, the studio and machines you are checked out on are available 24/7.

Hi Amelia,

Sounds good. I’ve sewn before but it’s been a while so I may just attend the Sewing 101 class on Tuesday.

Thank you for the information!

Hi Amelia,

Is there still going to be a Sewing 101 Class on Tuesday? I see a mid-day sewing maintenance class on Monday but that’s it. If it’s still happening I will continue to keep an eye out for it.

I just submitted a ticket to make sure there was not a problem with the calendar.
I’m intending to have the class on Tuesday. I will be there even if it’s not on the calendar.

Remember that the normal “waiting” time is 48 hours for non-honorarium, and 72 hours for honorarium.

Sure, we’ve seen a lot of classes “bumped up”, but some authorized person has to do that. Apparently that one person that does that a lot has been busy.

It is live now.

Okay Thanks!

Would it be possible to meet one-on-one instead to get checked off to use the machines? I will be at the makerspace nearly every night this week.

I am teaching classes every night this week. I don’t have time to meet up in the evenings outside of this class. I will have time next week but I don’t have time this week

I have time before the Wednesday sewing meeting if you are available.
