How to cut a complex curve on the manual lathe

For those of you who may want to cut a complex curve and think we need a CNC lathe to do so. Here is a interesting video. Go to the 25 minute mark to see the ‘trick’

seems to me that some sort of ball-bearing follower for the template would be faster than having to keep one eye on the part and another on the guage. But sure, there are otherways to accomplish the same thing. thanks.

Manual lathes frequently have template guides that automatically adjust the cross feed based upon the template. We do not have that accessory for the colchester nor the new lathe.

This is one of the two methods that is available, and the simpler of the two. The other uses dial indicators for ‘coordinate’ work.

Interesting. He’s using his dial indicator on a 2D template like the “follower” on a lathe duplicator. Of course it doesn’t control his cut, but it does show him where he needs to be.

I was thinking of you when I posted this. Seems perfect for many of the things you do… You’ll just need a tenths reading indicator for the size work you do!
