How to Cut 4x4 Beams?

I seem to remember something in the Woodshop Safety Course about not cutting 4x4 beams on the miter saw. I might be misremembering because there was a lot of great information in that course.

Either way— what’s the best way to cut 4x4 cedar beams at DMS?

Bandsaw would be the best way to crosscut a 4x4. They can accommodate very thick pieces.

Failing that, if you do it on a tablesaw or miter saw, you’ll want to do multiple passes, as you don’t want to try to remove too much material at once.

That all depends on what type of cut you want to make?
Cross cut?
Rip cut?

If you’re feeling adventurous you could use a hand saw?

The chop saw is perfectly okay to use for 4 x4 but you need the full fence installed.

You can cut it on the table saw, however you run the risk of tripping the brake because the moister is usually high on new cedar.

Cross cuts. I intend to build a platform for a 275-gallon IBC tote for a rainwater collection system.

Then the the Makita chop saw is your solution. Just make sure the fence extensions are on.
