I left DMS a couple months ago due to a spouse job relocation. I wanted to share how I got two offers (1 in Washington D.C. 1 in Baltimore) by video conferencing from DMS. I’ll start on August 1st with the State of Maryland coming from City of Dallas & Dallas County governments, I was able to increase my salary by ~32% (a lot of that due cost of living, but some due to negotiating!) I’m currently on a fellowship at the Sunlight Foundation in DC working on government transparency projects.

Reserve the conference room. Block off some private time for use of a conference room by using the calendar request form (click Add an Event). I did this to make sure there were no time conflicts and to mitigate someone opening the door during a crucial job interview.

Setup good lighting. Borrow two video lights from the photo/video area and make setup like this:

Test your connections. We benefit from very fast sequential internet speeds at DMS. I asked several family members in different locations in the U.S. to test my bandwidth, ask them about lighting, etc. My personal laptop was woefully under powered but still was able to produce a 720p stream (depending on your streaming service (Skype, GHangout, One interview used Appear.in which is my go to video conference suite now. )

15-25 minutes before the interview, setup the room, lighting and make a sign for the door like “Do not disturb, very important life changing interview occurring within room”. Use any free time time find your future potential bosses on LinkedIn, find strategic plans or business details on the employer (TDLR; do your homework on the prospective employer)

Smile and have a great interview!
Thank you DMS.
