It’s 1/4" brass rod. The e clip I have measures .038" thick. A little wiggle is not a big concern.
The Mcmaster E-clips seem to be quite a bit thinner than yours. It looks like they recommend 0.004" of total clearance. the amount of clearance you have does matter as it will affect how the E-clip takes the load. A wider slot will permit E-clip the cone more when under load. If your application is not under much of a load (as I assume from your use of brass) it should be fine. But just something to keep in mind.

How many are yo going to “design out” of your battle bot? Unfortunately they are very effective & efficient fasteners/retainers. Just highly toleranced as to the features of the groove.
I am hoping to avoid them on the battle bot or only use them as backup fasters. Most things will be held in place by m4 or m5 set screws.
