Helping strangers find DMS

Do you think the landlord would mind if I put a big “#104” under the “1825” on the front window?

I don’t think the landlord would have any problem with that. I think that putting the word “MAKERSPACE” on the window would be even better than just the number.

From my limited experience dealing with commercial real estate “landlords”: they don’t mind you doing non-permanent cosmetic things.

I would imagine a vinyl sticker stating the tenants (i.e. Dallas Makerspace) would be acceptable to the landlord. I would suggest asking a board member (@AlexRhodes @Robert_Davidson @Kentamanos @BenjaminGroves @AndrewLeCody) since it involves our lease agreement. It might even involve some silly Carrollton zoning ordinance.

Edited for clarity

Honestly probably a bit larger project than you were thinking but I have been thinking we are at the point we need a real building sign.

The Landlord is extremely reasonable and we could likely use the windows, that being said if you would be up for getting quotes on putting up an actual sign that would likely be a larger win.

Here is the City requirements

A photograph in addition to the map might also be helpful on our web page.

Carrollton does have a rather extensive 69 page ordinance but they do appear to have some relevant permissive items after the requisite applications, fees, inspections, etc.

A fast very cursory reading:

B. Nameplates not exceeding two square feet in area. see page 21
R. Window signs/painted window signs. Maximum size shall not exceed 25% of total window area for any linear wall segment.
Exception: Up to four (4) square feet may be used to post business hours and contact information without being considered within the 25% limitation. see page 22
Q. Signs painted directly on face of building are prohibited. page 29 - although our neighbors seem to have gotten around/ignored this.

Turn on the Maker-signal!

I seem to recall several people posted that we were not allowed to put up a sign.

A lesson from geocaching is that something which looks like it belonged is invisible to the general public. My thought was that adding the suite number will probably not be noticed except by those specifically looking for us. It is generic enough that the landlord will not need to remove it if we were to relocate, so may not object…except that the other tenants may want one too.

Not sure who would say we can’t put up a sign…

We must lawfully put up a sign it just takes a little work to make sure it fulfills all the regulation.

Speaking from experience in the commercial building arena… A vinyl sticker sign (large) in the window would be tacky and not well received.

I assume a lighted LED sign is out? What about 1 window panel as an LED video wall.

Went back and read the lease I will check with the landlord on who they recommend to do signs.

Bill are you up for taking it from there?

"No sign, placard, picture, advertisement, name or notice (collectively referred to as “Signs”)shall be

installed or displayed on any part of the outside of the Building without the prior written consent of the Landlord

which consent shall be in Landlord’s sole discretion. All approved Signs shall be printed, painted, affixed or

inscribed at Tenant’s expense by a person or vendor approved by Landlord and shall be removed by Tenant at

Tenant’s expense upon vacating the Premises. Landlord shall have the right to remove any Sign installed or

displayed in violation of this rule at Tenant’s expense and without notice."

A possible work around to make @Lampy’s idea work. If we built an Led Display in the Window in the 3D fab room, we wouldn’t have to follow the sign guide lines as it wouldn’t be outside of the building. Plus, it wouldn’t have to be weather proof either.

Best to get landlord approval on anything displayed in the window, especially if it is something that will be at an expense and cant be used elsewhere if later they say to remove it.

Some HOAs or mobile home parks dont allow things to be displayed in windows. That manner of tacky-ness is sometimes followed through on commercial buildings.

Displayed on the outside means if it’s visible to the outside world.

I was speaking of a sign made up of LED panels to make a medium sized video wall inside the glass window.

Similar to:

When stuff like the front door that doesn’t latch, wouldn’t signs be an invitation for unauthorized people to just walk in.

Those LED walls, while awesome technology-wise, are really blindingly bright, maybe if they’re on a 10% duty cycle so I don’t have to wear sunglasses when walking to the front door.

Let’s take the Eddie Gossage way to it. BIG HOSS. Lol. We want Scott Kelly to see us from the space station right?

Just a side-note. All of the paperwork for Tesla Destination Charging is now complete and sent off. We should be appearing on the maps within a few weeks.

That should help some more people find us.
