Help with new large format printer

I have a brand new large format printer, 24"Xx48"Yx24"Z axis and a good stock of assorted filament. I am somewhat familiar with the process, having self taught myself CNC for my three CNC machines. Although familiar, I would rather have someone get this machine operational and show me instead of again going through the trial and error and a long manual. I will pay for time and/or trade for machine time. I also have a giant format 7foot x 16foot x 4footZaxis printer purchased and on the way. Right now I am looking for someone to help with the immediate issues, but for the right person this could be an ongoing gig. We do some pretty interesting stuff, just finished five Lamborghinis for the new Transformers Movie, need this printer for Fast And Furious Ten cars, Shelby Daytona Coupes are also waiting, that is a small sample. Charley Strickland P.S., also have a new laser scanner powerful enough to record an entire car that I could also use some help with.

Charlie welcome to talk.

First things first, I’d suggest you remove your number from your post. It will get picked up by the search engines and sold.

That being said, sounds like you have the nice toys many of us would drool over. Typically with a 3D printer you’d have a slicer set up for it. What’s your experience withb3d printers before this?

What type of assistance are you looking for?

This sounds like a job for @themitch22 Mitch Cerroni.

Thank all of you your replies, I answered via email before I saw the posts here.

Sounds awesome making giant movie prop cars. Large format 3D printers shouldn’t be too much different than the small ones, except the extruders are usually pellet feed or high flow hotends. I don’t have a lot of time lately but if no-one bites I can come check out what you have.

This sounds like an awesome project. I’m interested in helping - will send you a direct message.

Weird behaviors come into play with very large printers. It was hard to sling around large gantries without getting some artifacts of vibrations in the surface finish.

My son ran a 12’ x 8’ x 20’ printer and a couple of 4’ x 4’ x 4’ printers. And even with a volcano extruder and massive filament (~6 - 9mm on 10kg rolls) it took forever to print stuff, like a week for an executive desk.

Evan, sent you a PM

Lampy, yes it has a dual Volcano Head. They tell me I can print a car body in a week. Considering the options, and the economics of those options, I do not care how long it takes. I suspected that there might be minor tolerance issues on such a large machine, but again I think no worse than any other option.

Interesting idea, wonder how many heads would be practical? They were looking at a pellet feed system but it didn’t seem to be ready for prime time by the vendor.

The system my son ran even had heated beds but they didn’t use them. They were essentially 24" x 24" panels each powered by a 12 battery charger. Kinda sketch!

This has heated beds as well, but not a battery charger. It takes two separate 20A dedicated circuits. To everyone that has responded, Evan is coming to assess this thing when I return home next week. Looking forward to having him.
