Help where are my files and why?

Admittedly it has been a couple years or so since I have worked on my projects at the Makerspace. I logged into the jump server and loaded Vcarve and all of my Vcarve project files seem to be gone. I believe they were in my Documents folder which is now empty. This is obviously very upsetting, it seems like my work is just gone.

I also noticed that my user folder in the woodshop CNC directory has been moved to a folder called Unauthorized_users. Can someone please tell me what’s going on?

I cannot speak about the woodshop CNC folder - although I have a couple ideas on why that might be, I believe they require updated training if you haven’t been there in a while, which might be why it’s now considered unauthorized.

The documents folder on computers are local to that computer, and also will be lost if the computer needs to get replaced or updated/ etc. The folder that is usually recommended people to store things in is the network drive to members folder, which is found under the this PC tab. Has your membership been active the last few years and you’ve just not been by much, or has your membership lapsed during that time?

As a note, since everybody, including the infrastructure team is volunteer run, we do NOT make any guarantees about safety/durability of files stored on our systems.

Thanks for your response. I’ve paid all my dues, but had a brief hiccup when my debit card expired. I think I paid in a timely manner though. I should have been in an active status this whole time. I was able to use my badge earlier this year, although I didn’t try to access the wood shop. Curious if anyone knows if I need to do all of the wood shop training or just the CNC.

I believe most of the old woodshop training is still valid.
So probably just the CNC. Beyond that there are some new bandsaws that I think also require additional training.

Heads up, if you do change your badge or need to reset your badge, woodshop tools take between 30 minutes to a few to resync.

If you’ve been active we wouldn’t have purposely deleted files or anything - but we have run into issues with storage space on Jump and it’s crashed a couple times so… yeah. Might be worth checking if you’ve got a user folder on the network members drive though - I did move a couple members folders there because they were too big.

Thanks again. Yeah I had some laser cutting files on the member drive which is still there. I guess I was lazy and saved vcarve files to the default location in the User Documents folder. It makes sense why the files are no longer there.

They could be anywhere. We have seen in the past that files were unknowingly transferred to other folders while on the jump or members drive.

Secondly, while we do not normally actively delete old files, your files are not secure. Don’t let it be the only stored source that you have to keep stuff like this. Save yourself some trouble & have a backup copy.
