My buddy and his wife inherited this rifle from her father. Any idea what it is? I didn’t find anything other than a serial number, but I only had a couple minutes to have a look. Nothing clandestine or anything like that. I just was leaving when he showed it to me and couldn’t stick around to look closer. The shell is 303. I took a pic of the markings on the shell, but is is too blurry to be of help.

I think it’s a Savage Model 99.

Yep Savage 99, and an old one. Looks like (at least the receiver) was made in 1916.
Oh, and for what it’s worth, the round is (almost certainly) 303 Savage, which can be pretty tough to get ahold of these days.

Thank you @Draco for adding the Hatchers tag, and @lukeiamyourfather and for the link, and @braims. Wasn’t sure where to start Googling. All I turned up was a list of firearms that used the 303. DMS pool of k owledge always amazes me.
