We will be in our usual meeting room at UTD,the ScienceLearning Center (SLC), room# SLC.1.102. Here’s a map. Only park in lots H, I, or J. Parking anywhere else on campus could result in a ticket.

Speaker: Tong Liu, President, Hubble Optics

Presentation: Hubble Optics with Alt-Az initiative and NASA NICER and New Horizon MU69 Fly missions

Tong Liu has contributed to several NASA missions and will be talking telescopes. He will have some show and tell on hand and will discuss observing techniques, tips for choosing a telescope, and mirror technology. Mr. Liu recently relocated to the Dallas area and became a member of TAS so we are very honored to have him on board.

Annual membership dues are $50, plus $4 for each additional family member ($12 max)

They host local star parties for those who might be interested.

There is one tonight in the Frisco Commons Park starting around sunset

Next week, October 21st, in the JW Williams Park in Cedar Hill

The following week, October 28th, in the Shores Park

and there final location, will be on November 4th, at Spring Park in Garland

They try to cycle through these four locations each month, so check their calendar!

I consider myself to be more of casual observer. As we move into the winter months I generally get more interested as Orion and other incredible constellations become visible. (Orion was high in the summer afternoon sky during the eclipse but we were not able to see it.)

Star Walk is an amazing mobile app to help understand what is or will be visible at specific times. I have thought that it might be interesting to offer a DMS class on Star Walk and what you can see in the metro area without special equipment. Planets, constellations, Iridium flashes, International Space Station and other satellites are often visible if you know where to look. Kids would be very welcome.
