Handy dandy resolution chart for printing cell phone photos

I’m abandoning big prints for a while, I guess, and will be jumping into a technique I worked up a couple of years ago for some iPhone photos.

Here’s a link to how large you can make that snapshot without worrying about print quality:

My plan is to work up a few in 8x8, invert them, print them on the color copier (Yes, I’ll pay my 10 cents a copy. Nobody panic.), then use clear gel medium to print them to an 8 x 8 canvas. After they dry, the paper from the print is washed off. The final canvas is overpainted.

I’ll be working them up the first part of next week during the day in CA.

Also, does anyone know if there’s gel medium at the space, or should I head to Michael’s with a 60% coupon and pick some up?

We have no gel medium at the space. A few people have taught painting but just the basics so we haven’t had the need.

We do have midge podge that will do the same technique. Citra-sol that will vastly distort the image when combined with cheap white glue (works on magazines and laser) and you can also use nail polish remove if you want to transfer to paper. I enjoy transfers. Teach a class on it. People would be interested.

Thanks for the reminder about the mod podge (damn auto correct.) I’ll give that a go.

(Edit)

Much of that class would be watching mod podge dry. I’d have to think about how to work around that.

Is there a specific look you’re trying to achieve in doing the transfer?

I was wondering since there is canvas medium available on the large Epson printer and it does an excellent job of direct print. I know it’s down, but @pandabob is hard at work getting it revived.

For those who want to enlarge a low res file there is sftwr that will help you create a large print. I think the technical term is extrapolate. Anyway here’s a quick list:

  1. https://www.on1.com/products/resize10/
  2. http://akvis.com/en/magnifier/index.php
  3. https://www.alienskin.com/blowup/
  4. http://a-sharper-scaling.com/

Not an exhaustive list. Some have limitations. Some are sftwr plugins.

Nah. Just a way to play while the printer comes back to life. I think I’m going to do the first round on scrap wood instead of canvas, just to save me a trip to the art store.

Alas, no mod podge. Wood cut, photo printed, project aborted–for now.

did you lol in the adhesives box? I’m really sorry. Felt it was in the room or I wouldn’t have said it.

Indeed. It was in that box a few days ago. It was suggested it found its way to an artist’s large project.

Do we still put a consumable to the list on the wall when we’re out?

I bought some gel medium with my 60% off coupon that @HankCowdog gave us. Coupon worked like a charm. Gel medium is in my stash now.

Thanks for letting me know.
Yes, whatever you see missing please add it to the list of either think about buying or we are almost out. It helps out SO much on our turnaround from empty shelves to continuing the endless flow of stuff that comes to ca by magic.

Finished project. I’m pleased. As always, I learned a thing or two.
