Guiding people to rooms

Here is an idea …

Someone scans an RFID and it doesn’t need to be theirs but could be ANY RFID even a loaner. And points on a map or chooses from a list … or if it is a member, shows current classes in a list.

Then at any Data Pad (currently showing the calendar) on the wall, they can scan, it arrows them the right direction to where they wanted to go.

this sounds way too much like texting a family member at the dinner table when simply talking would work. My low/no tech solution: Ask someone. Most people are friendly and will respond and help.

Hey my idea is tame compared to some the suggetions I’ve heard …

Nick’s solution has the added benefit of encouraging interaction among human types. Now, if the idea can be used to navigate my local grocery, I’m in!

I still think we should have signs pointing in some areas … doesn’t need to be electric

Agreed. We used to, and with expansion, we’ll need them now even more.

Signs would be nice. I’m a very anxious person. Signs are comforting. It means you don’t have to interrupt the flow of a member’s day just so you can take an unscheduled tour or attend a class…

I build digital signage systems for a living. I can build it to show a live maps of where each person is in the space based on their RFID or Cell Phone if want

Or we can do a simple Lobby screen with calendar events and a wayfinding map as well as “flyer” space for events/meetups. Each classroom display can show the current event and next event (15 minutes before end of current event for example) as well as a green/red in use back lighting. Being touchscreens lets you mark it in use and for what for impromptu classes/events.

I built a system that used facial analytics to judge the mood of the viewer(s) and then send a message to the viewer’s phone (through a beacon) based on that mood.

Big indoor shopping malls have a map with a “You Are Here” arrow.

That works for me in malls, maybe it would work at our space. Edit: If we put it in our lobby, like malls have this at their entrances.

I think this is the better low tech solution. Just having signs up that can be read by looking down a hall, e.g. signs stick out from wall, cures most of the issues. 6 of the 7 dedicated classrooms are on two parallel halls, the other just as you enter the building. One of the halls is the one you’d turn onto to get to 104 from 102.

Even simple stripe system like Pearce made when we moved :“To Classrooms” would get you there from the Lobby.

Photomancer,

I suggest we combine your “signs sticking out of the wall” idea [nice] with my shopping mall “You Are Here” map at every entrance.

Given the size of the new DMS, newcomers will need all the help they can get!

hey it’s another version of a thread i rekindled forever ago.

what committee would be the right one to just implement standardized consistent signage for each new room/ door/ department across the whole building? overridding immobility due to beauracracy over relatively minor details

consistency would be key. a wood cut sign right next to an embroidered sign would create more lost and confused people than it’s worth

if it’s already in the works then disregard~

I disagree. 2 or more accurate methods would be better than the nothing we have now. Cardstock laser printed and tented would accomplish 90% of what people have said they want for little (relative) cost, but some one has to do it
Hand written postits would exceed the current status, but some one has to do it.
Personally, I’m on the “wait til expansion and do it once” wagon, but with how often it comes up, maybe postits need to happen…
