Grinder versus belt sander

The small bench grinder in the machine shop seems a little lacking. It doesn’t appear to have decent tool rest, which I think is something of a safety hazard, but I am guessing it is mostly used for free grinding steel, not tools.

That said, does anyone else think acquiring a 1" X 42" belt sander would be a good acquisition for the space. These would be safe for all metals, and the can easily accomodate inside and outside curves.

You are correct and the Metal Shop USED to have belt sander in it for metal which I used quite a bit, but sometime between March and when I started coming back up there a few weeks ago it disappeared. I have asked Danny Meeks and a few other people and no one seems to know where the hell it went.

Does anyone have information they care to offer?

At any rate, I spoke with Danny after the MIG class on Saturday and asked if we could fund for another belt sander for metal and he indicated agreement. Furthermore, I would like a dual option where one side covers more than a 1" strip (like a 6" circular disc) as you sometimes have a longer section of metal that needs to be stripped down and I don’t want to wait as my clothes go out of style trying to accomplish a simple task.

We have a belt grinder, we just need to decide where to put it and wire it up.

That sounds promising, but do you know where the one in the metal shop went to? Danny verified that I did not hallucinate the presence of that tool.

The little orange one? Ed told me the belt broke and they didn’t have any replacements. I have no idea where it got to, though.

Bryan,

The little orange one?

I think it was closer to lavender…

Hell, I don’t remember.

Ed told me the belt broke and they didn’t have any replacements.

I have no idea where it got to, though.

The information is much appreciated.

So belt sander belts don’t come in standard sizes? I am not disputing the statement, but I am a bit surprised and whenever I get to shopping around for one myself, I will watch out for proprietary consumables.

I have no idea where it got to, though.

Understood.

But I am curious about DMS policy on donated machines, equipment, etc. or anything that is on loan. If it breaks and for whatever reason it is deemed not repairable, what is the process for removing it from the premises and records? (if it is on the equipment list)

We may not be talking about the same thing. What I’m referring to was orange and had a 1½" wide free-floating belt. I’d guess belts are available, but I couldn’t find it to get a measurement.
Committee chairs have authority over DMS equipment in their area. Loaned items are supposed to be clearly labeled, and of course if they’re to be removed the owner is expected to pick them up.
As for the equipment list: I personally never remember it exists. I wouldn’t put any faith in it’s completeness or accuracy. If it were up to me it would be deleted.

I have been updating the tool list on the wiki, so I think it should be reasonably accurate for electronic, wood shop, metal shop, and the machine shop in terms of big tools that are out and about.

If you remember something being on there that isn’t any longer @JAGMAN you can look at the revision history for that page and ask the person who removed it.
