HOLD UP I just made two of those YESTERDAY please tell me they are not in the trash! I just forgot to put a label on them!

can they be dug out of the trash still? where are they?

Red dumpster behind ceramics. I didn’t slam pieces in but I also didn’t lay each piece gently down as I am loathe to touch any part of a dumpster.

Please label your pieces folks! We have no way of knowing any information about your work if you do not provide it.

Also, big thanks to everyone for picking up their fired work! I only had to dispose of five pieces that were past three weeks. Excellent job!

Are you gonna post pictures of the stuff that you disposed from the firing shelf?

No, those pieces already have photos from when they came out of the kiln and their timer started. The pots from the greenware shelves don’t have any prior photos and we post them as a courtesy. That way no one is left scouring the shelves for their forgotten item. Hope this helps!

A 7 ft tall angel named London fished my pieces out of the dumpster. Thank you for not punting them into there. they are perfectly safe and will be raffled off at the bonsai club next month probably.

Happy you were able to retrieve them relatively unscathed. And please remember to label your wares! I talk a big game about how I’m no longer soft hearted, but throwing away pots is always sad.

I will say, a few weeks ago I had a piece covered in plastic with the label on the plastic and when I came in someone had removed my plastic, leaving my pieces unlabeled. Maybe unlabeled greenware should be given a 24 hours heads up with a picture like this before tossing?

I understand the frustration! Working in a community environment has challenges for sure. However, this is in fact asking for even more volunteer time from others.

I spent 2+ hours yesterday carefully going through all the delicate greenware, washing abandoned bats, scraping mold off wareboards, consolidating bisque/glaze to make room for new pieces, meticulously placing markers in every fired pot to accurately keep track of time (and cross checking photos), and taking pieces to the dumpster all while also answering pottery questions for people. Which I love, don’t get me wrong, happy to do it. And I’m not alone, people put in so many hours to keep things running!

Adding yet another task, plus managing all the communication back and forth that would come in from people requesting extensions on their forgotten pots, etc. and having to come back again the next day to work on admin again is a lot.

And please don’t take this is a discouragement from offering ideas! I love ideas. If you are interested in making this change and have the volunteer hours to give, send me a note on Talk or catch me at the space or bring a plan to a meeting and we can see what is possible! I’m taking over from Sonya while she is out and I’m following her method plus the change we voted on at the last monthly meeting regarding unlabeled items, but she will be back soon. Thank you for your help and while I have reservations, there could be a way to word things so it doesn’t just create a lot of additional fuss. I’m game to try if you are down to help!

Seconding what Christy has already mentioned, we are not against idea to change the rules of disposal of pieces.
The main issue is simply the lack of volunteers and space to implement a more lenient set of rules. Which forces us to stick to a concise, if at times strict, set of rules so we can try to be mindful of our volunteer’s time. If anyone reading this feels like they can spare a couple hours a month to volunteer to provide that improvement to the space please feel free to message me or discuss it at the monthly committee meetings.

Also! Easy, immediate fix: two pieces of tape. One on outside of the plastic, one on bat/wareboard. Low effort-big safety!
