I’d like the 240 grit which comes in either pack for sanding leather to prep for gluing and the 1/4" width is ideal. I’ve used emery boards in the past, but don’t really like them. And can’t justify buying a whole set for the leatherworking crew at $25.
Those would likely be cost prohibitive to stock … pretty sure they would end up being one-time-use and they would walk away. But you could make something similar for real cheap.
Take a piece of 1/2" plywood or similar solid wood - about 9" square (sandpaper is 9" x 11"). Bevel a roughly 20 degree wedge on two opposite ends. Using hide glue, glue a sheet of sandpaper of your preferred grit to the plywood. Cover both bevels and leave about 1" hanging over the edge. After the glue is dry, wrap the sandpaper around the edge of the bevels and glue the flap to the edge and the back side. When the glue is dry, rip the plywood into thin strips - 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", or whatever. Then cross cut them in half.
I would suggest that you use the laser for this. You can choose 1/4" plywood and laser out the shape Chris shows above. You can also laser out the strips of sandpaper themselves. Then it is just a question of gluing them up. Using a CNC to produce the product will make it faster and easier to keep stocked if they turn out to be single use as Chris suggests.
In either case using the CNC will allow you to produce an accurate cost for each. I would guess $2-$4 when all is said and done.
That would be one way to do it - especially if someone isn’t comfortable with the saws.
Having made lots of sanding sticks the manual way (albeit not beveled), it truly takes only a few minutes to do this. Cutting after the sandpaper is attached eliminates a fussy alignment operation.
I know HobbyTown USA carries sanding sticks. Hobby Lobby may - they used to - I have not looked recently. With Hobby Lobby, you can use a 40% off coupon to buy a set, then made your own “refills” from sandpaper sheets.
LOL…no…that’s YOU - the queen of everything DMS could do that quick and cheap…I’d waste 1/2 a day fiddling with the saws and the computer to lay it out for the laser and then using the laser.
Found the individual sticks for $3 each at MSC… They aren’t single use, they use replaceable sanding bands and using them on leather, they last a long time. Just need that pointy narrow edge and the replacement bands are less than a buck each. $4 vs half a day, 3 Mountain Dews, lots of cussing and fussing. That kinda makes up my mind, lol.
The implication was that they would wander off with users who thought they had more need, or different need than intended; not that they are INTENDED for single use.
